Making Money vs Career Satisfaction
In today’s tough economic climate, you may find yourself questioning what means more to you: career satisfaction or making money.
We often spend years working towards the job of our dreams, but if the money isn’t there, should we give up on these dreams? Does it matter if we are unhappy at work, as long as we have more than enough money to survive on?
This is a constant debate for many people, so how do you know if it’s time for a change?
Making Money
In times of an economic downturn, many people are choosing a well paid job over their dream career. With UK unemployment at a 17 year high, many people are lucky to be in work at all. Making money then, is seemingly replacing our desires for our career of choice.
Homeowners and people with young families in particular are choosing well paid positions over their dream job. With ever-increasing household bills, people are struggling to survive on their monthly wage. Well paid jobs, that are not necessarily as fulfilling, are becoming more and more appealing.
More and more people are also considering life after employment. When it comes to retiring, most of us are left scrimping and saving. Those lucky enough to be in higher paid jobs can afford to add that little extra into the pension pot.
Career Satisfaction
If you have spent years at university, gaining experience and qualifications, the lure of a dream job is overwhelming. Many people grow up knowing exactly what they want to do with their lives. This drive and commitment helps them see them achieve these dreams. Even if the pay isn’t quite as exciting as you would like.
When you find yourself in a job you enjoy, you are much more likely to be productive and hardworking. Finding the work you do interesting, exciting and challenging makes earning a little less seem worth it.
Career driven individuals are more likely to progress in work, because they appreciate the company. If you are satisfied in your career and enjoy what you do, getting up for work in the morning is never a chore. Enjoying your job, especially after you have worked hard to get where you are, is the greatest reward for many young professionals.
Striking the Balance?
While it may seem impossible, especially given the economic climate, to strike a balance between making money and enjoying your job; is it really that hard? There are plenty of extremely rewarding and well paid careers to choose from, giving professionals the best of both worlds.
There is also always the option of requesting a pay rise, or looking for a promotion within your company. If you have proven yourself over a long period of time, many employers will do their upmost to offer pay rises where appropriate.
It is important to work out on a personal level what means most for you. Everyone’s situation and position is unique – what is best for one is not necessarily for others. Any career change needs to be carefully considered, taking families and your financial situation into account.
