As someone who runs a site about credit cards offers, I’ll share with you two different approaches to making money with them. In part one, I will talk about strategies for consumers. In part two, I’ll show you how to make money with credit card offers by advertising them on your blog or website.

Part One: Earning rewards as a consumer

There’s really a two-fold approach; getting signup bonuses and earning rewards on your spending.

1. Signup Offers – Lately, many banks have been offering some unusually large signup offers. Why? Well during the Great Recession, many people switched from credit to debit cards. So now the banks are trying to recruit back customers by giving them a large incentive to go back to credit. This means it’s a great time to make money with credit card promotions!

• Credit Card Offers For Cash Back – When you sign-up for a new card, you can get a cash bonus ranging from $100 to $500. However you typically won’t receive this bonus unless you spend a certain amount within the first 3 months of opening the account. For example, Chase offers a $200 bonus on their Freedom card but in order to get it, you have to spend $500 during the first 3 months.
• Offers For Airline Tickets – If you’re okay with not getting straight up cash, then go for travel cards because their bonuses will typically be worth more. Also, another benefit with them is that many give you the bonus after your first purchase (instead of having to spend a certain amount). For example, the Southwest Airlines card gives 25,000 points after your first purchase.

When making money with signup offers, there are a few things to keep in mind. For starters, you’re going to need a great credit score in order to get approved for most offers. Secondly, it’s not a good idea to open and close accounts after only a year. Why? Because part of your credit score is based on the average age your account is opened. So instead of applying for several, be strategic and only apply for one or two of the best ones.

2. Earning Rewards Long Term – Signup offers are nice, but make sure it’s a card you will want to use in the long run, too. Here are some factors to consider:

• Normal Spending: Most cards only give 1% cash back on “regular” purchases which don’t fall under special categories. So that’s nothing too exciting.
• Category Spending: This is where you can make some nice money, because many cards offer higher rewards on select categories of spending; up to 2-6% cash back. For example the PenFed Credit Union Platinum Cash Rewards card gives and unlimited 5% rebate at gas stations.

Part Two: Promoting credit cards on your website

If you have website in the personal finance or travel niche, you might be able to make some decent money by promoting credit card offers through affiliate marketing. So how do you do it the right way? Well here are 5 things you need to know.

1. Issuers pay on a per approval basis

For that reason, you should only use the affiliate approach if you think the person clicking will actually be applying and getting approved. If that’s not the case, you will be better just sticking with Adsense or another pay-per-click platform.

For example on my site, I have a ranking of 5% cash reward card offers. Since people come to that page by searching for terms like “best cash back credit cards” I know they are coming with the intent to apply. For that reason, I use affiliate links. However on lower quality pages where I have people entering using unrelated keywords, I stick with Adsense.

2. Issuers are very strict with compliance

As is the case with most things in the banking industry, there are strict laws and regulations surrounding the marketing of credit card offers. For this reason, going the affiliate route is not a good idea for the passive webmaster. Only promote credit cards if you are willing to do constant updates, sometimes there are multiple changes per week you need to make.

3. Issuers pay the most for premium credit cards

With prepaid and credit cards to rebuild credit, you will be lucky if you come out with an average EPC of a $1 (usually it’s far less). However with the higher-end travel reward cards, like the $450 AmEx Platinum, your average EPC can be significantly higher if you have high-quality converting traffic.

4. Payouts can be negotiated

How do you make money with credit cards on your website? Well first, you will have to signup for an account with an affiliate network, such as FlexOffers or NCS Reporting (two of which I personally use). Starting out you will only earn base payouts, but if you do heavy volume, then you should negotiate for higher CPAs (some have room to go up, while others may be fixed due to the bank’s rules).

5. It’s best to focus on a specific type of card

Because the competition is so fierce nowadays, it’s a bad idea to spread yourself too thin by trying to promote every type of card on the market. Instead, you should focus on a specific type. For example if I were launching my website today, I would probably only focus on the best cash back credit cards or the best balance transfers… but not both!

Even though the number is so large but most of the products are simply junk. In other words they are not worth selling to customers. These eBooks or software are basically compiled by some inexperienced vendors.

Even if one of your customers purchased an eBook he or she will return it immediately asking for the refund of amount they paid. You have to toil hard to find one product which is good enough that solve the problems of people.  

Tough Competition

If you got one good product to promote then also you will find it very difficult to sell even one single copy of it. The reason is very obvious, competition is so tough that thousands of affiliate marketers are promoting that same product.

Moreover there are affiliate marketers who are very experienced and they do not give any space to other marketers especially who are newcomers. You really have to work hard to reach out to your customers.

I must warn you that if you are new marketer then it may take months to sell even one single product. Thus you can imagine the level of competition. Hundreds of marketers join ClickBank daily making “tough competition” as a dark side of affiliate marketing.

Trust Deficit

Even if you are able to manage tough competition, convincing people to buy your product would not be that easy. The reason is very simple, there is a lot of trust deficit. People will not believe you that you are selling something that is going to solve their problem.

Reason for distrust is, there are a lot fake marketers who are selling get rich scheme. They are basically a fraud. It is because of them honest marketers like you pay the price. Gaining their trust is not easy, you have to establish yourself as an authority.

If you are selling something to customers then they must take you as an expert in that particular field. So overcoming trust deficit is great challenge and another darker side of ClickBank.

Piracy

Even if you overcome competition and trust deficit then also you cannot sell because of Piracy. As your products are basically eBooks and software, so they are easily downloadable. Hence they are available on all pirate website like Files tube, Torrents etc.  

Anyone could get a good product freely from pirate websites. Hence why should they purchase a product giving $40 to $50 when they are getting it for free?

Because of piracy many businesses have become bankrupt. Piracy is yet another dark side of ClickBank.

In conclusion I would only say, all the time people will only tell you the sunny side of ClickBank. However you must have to also know the dark side of it which is hidden from us.
